11/14/2013 - The Open Eye Theater is seeking actors of all ages, male and female, for upcoming productions and rehearsed readings. Directors, Stage Managers, Designers, Production Assistants, and Technicians are also needed. Auditions and interviews will take place at the theater, 960 Main Street, on Saturday and Sunday, November 23 and 24, from 3:00 - 5:00, or at alternative times by appointment.
Open Eye Producing Artistic Director Amie Brockway has announced that holiday shows include "Dulce Domum," adapted from "Wind in the Willows" by Kenneth Grahame, and "Silent Night," a new one-act play by Walt Vail, based on a true event in World War I. There will be two or three matinee performances on Saturdays and Sundays in December. Performance dates will be chosen from December 14, 15, 21, 22, and 29. "Dulce Domum" calls for two men to play Rat and Mole, and many Carolers: men and women, boys and girls. "Silent Night" requires two men to play World War I soldiers, one English and one German, plus Carolers.
Among the winter and spring projects is a production of "Flowers in the Desert," a new play by Donna Hoke. Two actors in their 30s or 40s, one male, one female, are needed to play Britt and Joe who were married for 14 years and have called it quits. Three years later, Britt asks Joe to try again. He is still in love with her, but doesn't know that her cancer is back and what she wants most is a stable home for their three young sons, as well as a father who will raise them properly once she is gone. The play is filled with humor, sadness, determination, and love of the broadest and deepest kind. Performance dates are April 2-13.
Later in the spring, May 22-June 1, "Death Valley" A Love Story by Sandra Fenichel Asher comes to The Open Eye stage. The play is inspired by journals, collages, and photographs of Carol Emerson, LCSW and David Nutter, MD, telling their story of love, loss, grief, and recovery through the filter of Carol's memory. The play requires an ensemble of three women in their 50s who play Carol, David, and all the people in their story.
Several rehearsed readings are also planned with a variety of characters--men and women, of all ages. Titles, directors, and dates to be announced. The Youth Theater Workshop production with young actors ages 6 to 16 will be announced soon, and will perform in July.
Actors of all ages and levels of experience are encouraged to audition, and will be asked to read from a provided script and/or learn and sing a Christmas carol. Prepared monologues are welcome, but not required. Artists involved in full productions at The Open Eye Theater receive a modest stipend. Directors, stage managers, and technicians may send a resume to The Open Eye Theater, P O Box 959, Margaretville, NY 12455, attend the scheduled auditions and interviews, or phone for an alternative appointment date/time.
