Catskill Mountain Artisan Guild Opens Delhi Gallery

11/14/2013 - The Catskill Mountain Artisan Guild recently opened a new location in the village of Delhi completing another step in the creation of a regional artisans trail. The project is part of an effort by the Catskill Mountain Artisan's Guild and the Delaware County Chamber of Commerce to brand the region with an "arts identity" to draw in visitors as an economic stimulus to help revitalize our main street communities. The Artisan's Trail will create a highly visible forum for artistic expression and support for local artists while connecting our uniquely creative, diverse communities.

The opening of the Delhi Gallery represents the culmination of an almost two-year effort on the part of the Chamber, the Catskill Mountain Artisan's Guild and the Delaware County Department of Economic Development to complete the Delaware County portion of a regional artisan's trail. "The Arts are a huge part of the tourism industry for Delaware County," stated Mary Beth Silano, Executive Director of the Delaware County Chamber, the Tourism Promotion Agency for Delaware County. "We have such diversity in the arts; visual, literary, performing, and so many talented individuals. The Catskill Mountain Artisans Guilds new facility will showcase this diversity, but more importantly, it will enhance the lives and engage the community and tourists alike with the arts programming they make available."

As the guild approaches its 5 year anniversary, the organization can boast the creation of a reliable boilerplate for future replication of its gallery in neighboring towns and counties. "The successful development of the cooperative gallery in Margaretville with annual growth has proven the viability of our concept to shop local and support handmade regional artwork," stated founder and operator, Jill Cline. "The greatest interest from artists in our region has been for the development of new gallery locations and an on-line gallery. Regional artists have been anxiously awaiting and inquiring about new gallery spaces." As a result, the Catskill Mountain Artisans Guild has, and continues to, research future sites in Kingston and Phoenicia (representing both Delaware and Ulster Counties) in the continuance of the development of a regional artisan's trail. Based on the successes and growth of the Margaretville facility the Guild anticipates another location being added over the next 5 years further creating a unified, visual arts system to help drive tourism throughout the region.

The Catskill Mountain Artisan's Guild new gallery in the Village of Delhi is located at the NYS Route 10 and NYS Route 28 intersection, a prime business location at the heart of the community. Formerly home to the Cardio Club this location was a perfect fit for the Guild which the Chamber of Commerce had been trying to recruit to Delhi for some time. With the desire to avoid having an empty storefront Delaware County Economic Development and the Delaware County Chamber of Commerce facilitated the negotiations for the space. The freshly renovated approximate 2,700 square foot space will provide a well utilized second storefront for the promotion, display and sale of locally crafted products ranging from fine crafts and art to handmade furniture, regional books, CD's, art card collections, locally produced gourmet foods and wool products.

Economic Development Director, Glenn Nealis commented, "The development of the arts industry has the potential to be a vital contributor to our local economy. Artisans are really just small businesses and the development of the County's small businesses is a primary focus of our office. Products made and sold locally to residents and travelers market the resources of the area."
